Originally built in 1876 with an 80’s extension, this Victorian terrace had the grand proportions of a house of the era, however the kitchen and living areas had poky interiors and the building was generally dark and outdated. The owners (a young couple with three children and a dog) were longing for a home that was light-filled and open. The 80’s extension was removed and a new extension was designed to create a generous, voluminous and open living space with views to the garden from every angle.

The result is a glass-fronted expansive space with elevated height and windows that bathe the interior in dancing light utilising passive cooling techniques. ‘Lantern House’ references the extensions likeness to a Japanese ‘tōrō’ – a traditional lantern made of stone, wood, or metal. The home was meticulously crafted both inside and out. The interior feels like a day-spa through thoughtfully selected neutral tones and natural materials. The book matched marble kitchen splashback and hearth are reminiscent of Rorschach test prints – a subtle yet deliberate reference to the client’s professions in mental health.
